Industrial & Engineering Management

The Department of Management and Accountancy provides undergraduate degree programs of excellence in Management, Accounting, and Industrial and Engineering Management. All of the department’s business programs are accredited by AACSB International—Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Our mission is to develop lifelong learners who are effective communicators and who understand that learning is a collaborative, reflective process that requires the integration of knowledge from many sources. Our distinctive setting within a small, public, liberal arts university contributes to our focus on the human element in management decisions. Our size facilitates intellectual interaction among students and faculty. This interaction, as part of our emphasis on excellent teaching and active learning, encourages students to become effective contributors to their future professional and social environments.

Purpose

Industry needs managers who can understand and relate to the changing needs of today’s production and operations environment. The Industrial and Engineering Management Program is designed to give graduates a competitive edge by combining specific engineering and quantitative skills with fundamental management principles and concepts. With a strong liberal arts base, the program provides a sound general education as a foundation for lifelong learning, personal development and creative adaptability to change. I&EM graduates are prepared for careers as production managers, project managers, planning specialists, quality control specialists, inventory specialists, ergonomicists, technical liaisons and material managers, among others.

Program Requirements

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Engineering Management is a 124-hour program that requires 83 hours in math, physics, chemistry, engineering, economics, statistics, accounting and management. The Integrative Liberal Studies program, the required general education component, includes additional hours of course work.

Faculty

All of the faculty in the Industrial and Engineering Management Program hold doctoral degrees or professional certification. Faculty specializations include statistics, applied operations research, ergonomics, optimization theory, production and operations management, and computer simulation. In addition, local leaders in business, industry, government agencies and the legal profession contribute their expertise to provide a truly outstanding level of professional competence and familiarity with the world of management in a variety of organizational settings.

Admission and Transfer

For admission procedures and requirements, please contact the Admissions Office. Work completed at other accredited colleges or universities may be transferred for degree credit, provided that course content and coverage are substantially equivalent to courses offered by UNCA. Transfer of specific credits must be consistent with university policy and approved by the registrar and the chairperson of the Department of Management and Accountancy.
