The fourth annual S. Dexter Squibb Lecture series took place on Thursday, November 15, and Friday November 16. The speaker was Dr. James W. Mitchell, Adjunct Vice President of Lucent Technologies at Bell Labs.
Brief biographical sketch of Dr. James W. Mitchell

The globalization of the economy has influenced profoundly the dynamics of the interactions between corporations, academia and the community. Corporations now establish worldwide relationships with universities and participate in globally local communities. The major drivers and trends leading to this new landscape of interactions are discussed briefly and several examples described. Venture philosophy, an emerging approach for funding partnerships with the university and community will be discussed.
Results of curiosity-driven academic research are used routinely for advancing technology. While application specific research is essential for the near-term, basic research underpins long-term revolutionary advances. Examples are described that demonstrate the growing trend of direct academic participation in the free enterprise process. Both partnerships with industry and new ventures are described for accelerating the innovation process.
