Common Course Sequences: Monetary Economics and Finance
The table below describes several common course sequences for the concentration
in monetary economics and finance. It is based on two principles. First, the
sooner you complete the core theory courses (ECON 101, 102, 301, 302) the better
-- the theory courses form the foundation upon which the 300 and 400-level
applied courses build. Second, the more economics courses you have
completed before taking ECON 480 (including in particular ECON 365), the more
likely you will cap your UNCA career with a well-written, personally interesting
and technically superior senior paper.
Keep in mind that the course sequences described below represent common
paths, not
requirements. Many students navigate alternate paths through the
major. Be
sure, however, to satisfy the prerequisites to the advanced courses before
taking them. STAT 185, for example, must be taken before ECON 365
and ECON 380 must be taken before ECON 480; ECON 365 and 380, on the
other hand, could easily be taken the same semester. Further, while it is highly
advisable to take ECON 365 before ECON 480, it is not required.
Remember too that while the course offering pattern has been designed with
an eye to maximizing the number of paths through the major, every course isn't
offered every semester. For example, while it is possible to satisfy the
ECON 406 or ECON 450 requirement every semester, ECON 450 is offered in
the fall and ECON 406 in the spring. Visit the page describing the course offering pattern
to confirm that the courses you'd like to take are offered the semesters you'd
like to take them.

Notes: |
| 1. |
The cells highlighted in lime
are one path through the STAT 185, ECON 365, 380, 480 sequence plus ACCT
215; the cells highlighted in yellow
another. Though STAT 185 must be taken before ECON 365 and
ECON 380 must be taken before ECON 480, ECON 365 and 380 could
easily be taken the same semester. Further, while it is highly
advisable to take ECON 365 before ECON 480, it is not required. |
| 2. |
The cells highlighted in fuchsia
are alternate paths through the ECON 406 or 450 requirement. Note
that ACCT 215 and ECON 306 must be taken before ECON 406. |
| 3. |
The cells highlighted in red
are alternate paths through the requirement that two courses from ECON
210, 305, 310 or 350 be taken. |
| 4. |
ECON 480 must be passed with a grade of C or higher. |
| 5. |
Students with limited computer
experience should take CSCI 107 early in their academic career. |
| 6. |
Students interested in graduate school in
economics should take MATH 191 and 192. |
