How much does it cost to live on campus? back to top
We offer several different living choices that vary in price. For more information about the residence halls, please click HERE. Campus Dining Services provides flexible meal plans and a variety of high quality dining options for the UNC Asheville community. Resident students are required to purchase a meal plan that offers a wide selection of foods to accommodate many dietary needs and preferences. Every meal plan includes a munch money credit that students may use at the food court area in Highsmith University Union or at Cafe Ramsey (an atrium-like area off the library lobby). There are no meal plan exemptions. Students have an opportunity to change their meal plans during the first week of classes each semester.
Meal
Plan $ 1430 (approximate) 2008-2009 Residence Hall Rates (approximate per semester):
Founders Hall $1880 How many people live on campus? back to top About 1200 students live on-campus. Students live in groups of 25-45 students with one or two student staff members (Resident Assistants) assigned as resource persons who live on each hall. Are there special living options? back to top We offer several unique living accommodations. South Ridge is a wellness community. All residence halls are smoke-free, except for designated rooms in Founders, Mills and Governors Village. Additionally, 24 hour quiet floors and handicap-accessible rooms are also available. The Office of Residential Education and Housing Operations is committed to providing a residence hall environment that responds to the varied needs and interests of the students and the university. Several living options have been provided for the current school year and others are being planned for the future.
Quiet Floors These quiet hours are strictly enforced. Courtesy hours are 24 hours per day. Students who do not request a specific room, may be assigned to a quiet floor space. Only the Housing Office has the authority to designate halls as quiet and non-quiet.
Single-Sex/Coed Housing
Substance-Free Housing Are single rooms available? back to top Yes, but normally the single rooms are filled by the returning students. This is for two reasons: First, there are a limited number of single rooms. Secondly, we feel it is important that new students live for the first semester in an environment more conducive to meeting people and making friends. How are roommates paired together? back to top An on-line questionnaire is available to incoming students to gather information used in pairing roommates. Rarely are any two questionnaires exactly the same, but we look at student preferences and space available to place students with other students who have things in common. For example, you will not be placed with a student who reports he/she smokes if you do not smoke and prefer a roommate who does not smoke. What if I don't like my roommate? back to top There is a room change period two weeks after classes begin each semester. During this time, students may request to move anywhere for any reason. In many situations, students move not because they dislike their roommate(s), but because they have decided they want to live in a different area or have made a new friend with whom they would like to live. How will I know about the residence hall procedures, policies and services? back to top The majority of the residence hall procedures, policies and services are covered in the Residents' Handbook. Also, at the beginning of Orientation, every RA meets with the students on his/her floor and outlines the most important policies. These can also be found on this web site in our policies and procedures and housing operations sections, respectively. What sort of utilities/services are provided in the residence halls? back to top Telephone Service, Cable Television, Computer Services, Mail Services, Housekeeping & Maintenance Telephone service - Local telephone service, including a voice mailbox for each student, is included in the cost of the residence hall room. If you have any questions about the residence hall phone service or need to report problems with your phone service, please call University Telecommunications at 232-4995, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Nights or weekends, dial 251-6249. Cable Television - Cable television is available in all residence hall rooms. The basic cable charge is included in your room rate. Students wishing to obtain additional channels (HBO, Showtime, etc.) need to contact Charter Communications directly at 1-800-955-7766. Problems with your television service? Email the Maintenance Hotline. Housing staff will contact Charter Communications on your behalf and make arrangements for a service call. If you are not in your room when the service person arrives, Housing staff will escort the service person into your room and wait while the work is completed. Computer Services - Computer labs are located in Founders, West Ridge and South Ridge, Mills and one on each wing of the second floor of Governors Hall. Computer labs are available 24 hours a day for use by resident students. Food and drink are not allowed in the labs. Students found violating this policy will be subject to disciplinary action. Lab hours may be restricted based on treatment of labs and equipment. Students must supply their own paper for lab printers. The University of North Carolina at Asheville provides students who live on campus fast, free Internet connections. This service is known as ResNet, or "Residential Network." We feel that using the Internet is an important part of each student's education, and all students are encouraged to take advantage of the free Internet connections in their rooms. This service is a joint effort provided by the Offices of Residential Education and Housing Operations and the UNC Asheville Computer Center. To get more information on ResNet, such as requirements, instructions, software, how to activate your port, appointments, NetLaw, or help with your ResNet configuration, visit the university's ResNet web site. All students are reminded that they are also expected to adhere to the acceptable-use policies set by the UNC Asheville Computer Center. Mail Service - U.S. Mail is delivered to student mailboxes by 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Each residence hall has its own mail area where your mail is accessed by combination lock or key. For convenience, out-going mail boxes are available in each residence hall mail area except Governors Hall. Packages sent through the U.S. Postal Service are delivered in the morning with the mail, while packages shipped via UPS, Federal Express, or any other overnight service are delivered around 2:00 p.m. daily. A yellow package slip is placed in your mailbox to notify you that a package has been delivered for you. It is important that you take this slip and your photo ID with you to the Student Mail Services in the lobby area of Founders Hall between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. You will find the mailing address for your new "home" listed below:
(Your Name) If you have questions or comments regarding mail service in our residence halls, contact the Student Mail Services office at 828-250-2378 or send us a message. Housekeeping and Maintenance - Public areas in each residence hall are serviced by the UNC Asheville housekeeping staff. Cleaning each individual room is the responsibility of the resident(s) of that room. Maintenance requests are reported to the Offices of Residential Education and Housing Operations and work orders are generated from there. What should I bring to live in the residence halls? back to top The University provides the following: single bed, study desk with chair, dresser, window blinds and shower curtain. Students need to provide the following basic items: linens, (pillow, blanket, towels, washcloths, sheets), cleaning supplies, toilet tissue, and personal toiletry items. Additional items for comfort or decorative purposes vary widely from student to student. In planning what to bring, it might be helpful to know the following items are not allowed in the residence halls: candles, waterbeds, pets, halogen lamps, and appliances that use open burners or hot grease for cooking. Often students will wait to plan the details of their room decoration and wait to make any large purchases of decorating items until they meet and coordinate with their roommate(s). This can prevent the duplication of items and expenses. To see more information on each of the residence halls, click here. What if I have additional questions? back to top Please contact the Offices of Residential Education and Housing Operations if you have further questions. Send us an email, come by our office in Governors Hall 270, or call us at 828-251-6700. Our office is open Monday through Friday 8am - 5pm. |
