Sample Writing Intensive Proposals
assignments: small in-class writing projects about readings and field projects,
fieldwork
reports, and a term paper or ethnography. The instructor’s aim is
to give students a sense
of what anthropologists do, which is write descriptions and interpretations
of culture. One
strategy here is to ask students to write at different levels, so they understand
that writing
involves both informal and formal voices, short quick drafts and longer,
more developed
final papers. Another is to give students experience with the process of
writing—the
development of ideas initially in small pieces of writing and over time
cobbling these into
longer pieces of more polished writing. A variety of pedagogies will be
used, including
peer editing, whole-class critique, guided revision of drafts, and written
comments. Essay
exams are not being used to meet the assignment or page number requirements
because
students will not necessarily receive instruction about writing nor will
they be permitted
to revise/rewrite the exams.
