Personal statement: I tend to teach a lot of writing courses as the primary focus of my graduate work was in rhetoric and composition studies. I teach both Language 101 and 102 regularly and have taught the Honors section of 102 a number of times and on varying themes, e.g., the environment and the Vietnam War experience. Each fall, I teach a methods course in teaching writing for our students on the teaching of English track. I have also taught Studies in 19th-Century Literature and Introduction to Poetry. In addition, I regularly teach Humanities 324: The Modern World, and this spring I will intern in Humanities 124: The Ancient World, in preparation for teaching it. I love teaching Humanities because I will particularly enjoy interdisciplinary courses in the history of ideas. In recent years, my own scholarship has focused on a particular theory of rhetoric which focuses on the relationship between all language uses and the development of knowledge. I have published articles on it and have written a novel which attempts to illustrate many of the ideas embedded in that theory in a way which is both accessible and enjoyable. This experience has sparked in me a renewed interest in both fiction and creative nonfiction, reading as well as writing in both genres. |
