Tom Coppola
Jazz Piano, Jazz Combos

Tom Coppola started playing piano at the age of 8, when his mother dedicated part of the family savings to buying a Steinway Model M baby grand. His first interest in jazz came after his exposure to New York’s vast palette of jazz radio stations.

After graduating from Manhattan College in 1967, he pursued a recording career in New York City, with album projects, commercial jingles, and TV. He worked for six years as a music producer for NBC before returning to academia.

In 1994 he graduated from the University of Southern California with a masters degree in jazz studies, concentrating on piano performance with Shelley Berg. While at USC, Mr. Coppola also minored in film scoring, arranging and conducting, under the late Buddy Baker.

Mr. Coppola has been teaching jazz piano, jazz ensemble, and keyboard harmony and improvisation classes at UNCA for over six years. He is an active performer in the Asheville, NC area.
