The University of North Carolina at Asheville offers a number of jazz courses. Some of these classes have prerequisites or require an audition, others can be enrolled without the instructor's permission. Jazz Theory and Improvisation I and II
The theory and performance of jazz improvisation. Emphasis is on the construction of improvised melodies and practice skills designed towards freeing the student's abilities to perform musical improvised solos. The first semester is offered every spring semester and the second semester is offered in the fall. Prerequisites or instructor's permission are necessary to enroll in these courses.

Jazz History
A study of the development of jazz from its roots in ragtime and blues forms through contemporary acoustic and electroacoustic jazz styles. Offered every even year fall.

Jazz Arranging
The study and practice of arranging music for the small and large jazz ensemble. The culmination of this course is an arrangement for big band to be read through and possibly performed by the UNCA Jazz Ensemble. Prerequisites or instructor's permission are necessary to enroll in these courses.

Keyboard Harmony and Improvisation I and II
Common keyboard voicings and accompanimental improvisation techniques in various musical styles, with an emphasis on harmonic theory and contemporary chord symbol nomenclature. Prerequisites or instructors permission are necessary to enroll in these courses.

Applied Lessons in Voice or Instrument (8+ semesters available)
Private lessons on the student's instrument or in voice. Audition is required for enrollement in this course.

Special Topics in Jazz
According to interest, need, and staffing other courses in jazz are often taught at UNCA. Past courses have included Jazz History Since 1970.
