There are several jazz ensembles that students and community members may participate in at UNCA.
University Jazz Ensemble (Big Band)
Directed by Dr. David Wilken, the University Jazz Ensemble is a 17-19 piece big band, depending on the level of interest each semester. This ensemble consists not only of the top student jazz performers at UNCA, but also community members. Jazz students at UNCA enjoy the opportunity to play side-by-side with top local professionals and UNCA faculty members in this ensemble.
The University Jazz Ensemble performs at least one formal concert each semester, plus performs at the annual UNCA Invitational Jazz Festival each year. Repertoire this group performs ranges from traditional big band music from the Swing Era up to contemporary big band charts by members of the band and UNCA faculty.
University Jazz Combos
UNCA offers a number of jazz combos each semester. Jazz combos are directed by a number of UNCA Jazz Faculty, including Dr. David Wilken, Mr. Rich Willey, and Mr. Tom Copppola.
The emphasis in jazz combo is developing and refining small group jazz performance skills, including improvisation, arrangement, and composition. Repertiore performed by jazz combos focus on jazz standards, with additional pieces composed and arranged by UNCA students and faculty.
University Jazz Choir - Studio 18
Under the direction of Dr. Melodie Galloway, Studio 18 is UNCA's auditioned jazz choir. This advanced vocal ensemble performs a wide variety of literature. Studio 18 performs throughout the year on both formal and informal concerts.
