Greece and Turkey - Summer 2011

Study Abroad with UNCA

Plan now for the next Greece/Turkey trip which will be in Summer 2011

(There will be no Greece/Turkey trip in Summer 2010)

Three weeks in two countries: Greece and Turkey.  This is a multi-disciplinary program and you can complete one full cluster.

Courses:

CHEM 373 - History of Western Science, taught by Dr. Greg Boudreaux

This course covers the story of the ancient (Greek, Islamic, etc.) and medieval scientific achievements (in astronomy, physics, medicine, etc.) that laid the foundation for the incredible scientific developments of our time.  (Math majors who do not need the cluster, can take instead Math 303-History of Mathematics.)

CLAS 393 - Greek Epic and Tragedy, taught by Dr. Sophie Mills

This course covers the Iliad, selected Greek tragedies and some Greek history.  Although not primarily for advanced Classics majors, those with greater expertise in the discipline will certainly benefit from it as well.  It is taught completely in translation, and material covered is specifically tailored to our travels in Greece.

HWP 373 - Food Ways of the Mediterranean, taught by Dr. Amy Lanou

This course is a comparative discussion of the historical and modern food systems and cuisines of Greece and other Mediterranean countries.  Students will discover why Mediterranean diets are more health promoting than many others, learn about how these foods are produced and prepared, and enjoy the tastes of the cuisines of Turkey and Greece.

Cultural Experiences:

-Tour Topkapi Palace, home to Ottoman sultans

-Tour Aya Sofia and Grand Bazaar of Istanbul

-Visit Ancient Troy

-Experience an authentic Turkish bath
