Description:
This summer study focuses on "The Politics
of Foreign Aid," including
-3 weeks of instruction on UNCA campus,
where we will explore who gives, who gets, who decides, who implements, and
how results are evaluated, especially with respect to smaller, poorer
countries like Honduras. We will conclude by briefly surveying important
historical, political, economic and social developments in Honduras before
traveling there.
-18 days in Honduras, interviewing many of
the parties involved in and affected by specific foreign aid programs. We
will live with, learn from, and serve in the communities affected by foreign
aid projects sponsored by such organizations as the World Bank, US-AID, and
the Inter-American Development Bank.
Course Credit:
Students may choose to distribute credits in
either of the following combinations:
-POLS 373 (3 credits) and INTS 365 (3
credits)
or, INTS 365 (6 credits)
This course counts toward ILS Cluster 1:
Globalization and the Environment, and also fulfills a Diversity Intensive
requirement.

Program Costs:
Estimated cost is $2200, plus airfare,
6-credits of summer tuition, and incidentals.
Financial aid may be available to eligible
students through the "Mountains to the World" International Service Learning
Travel Grants and/or through the UNCA International Scholarship Fund, as
well as normal financial aid sources.
Applications:
Applications for the course are also
available in the Study Abroad Office (248 University Hall). Completed
applications are due no later than February 13, 2009. Please turn in a
completed application with a $125 processing fee to the Study Abroad Office.
