Fast Food: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly We all find ourselves at the fast food counter at some time, whether on the road or at the local mall.  A stop at Wendy’s or Taco Bell does not have to be a nutritional disaster.  Janet Zusi, UNC Asheville Dining Services Dietitian, will examine some of the local fast food restaurants and identify the “best” and “worst”. 2/16/2010, 12 - 1 pm, PDR 100/200 Register Here
Community Connections Day Health Screenings Park Ridge Hospital's WOW (Wellness on Wheels) van will be on-hand to provide a complimentary health assessment to include blood pressure, cholesterol (total, LDL, HDL), glucose, and body composition.  A health care professional will be on-hand to discuss your results. 2/26/2010

Hot Topics/Nutritional Myths Nutrition is an ever changing science with new evidence-based research coming out all the time.  Janet Zusi,UNC Asheville Dining Services Dietitian,  will provide an up-to-date review of recent findings that are relevant to the general population.  She will also clear up some of the “misinformation” that is so easy to find and disseminate on the internet. 4/6/2010, 12 - 1 pm, PDR 100/200 Register Here
Cooking Light Demonstration The chefs from UNC Asheville's dining services will provide a ‘hands-on’ cooking demo on easy-to-prepare, low-fat recipes.  They will also answer any cooking questions you may have.  Janet Zusi, UNC Asheville Dining Services Dietitian, will feature side dishes to add to the chefs' creations to make the meals nutritionally complete.  Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite recipes for analysis and possible ingredient substitutions. 6/22/2010, 12 - 1 pm, PDR 100/200 Register Here

All Walks of Life Walking Club:  Join your fellow employees for weekly walking adventures around the beautiful UNC Asheville campus.  Departing at 12:15 pm each Tuesday (weather permitting) from the bulldog statue known as “Rocky,” the group will explore parts of campus you may not have known existed.  Please wear comfortable clothing and footwear appropriate for variable terrain.

Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project:  ASAP helps create and expand local food markets that will preserve our agricultural heritage, give everyone access to fresh, healthy food, and keep our farmers farming. Their mission is to collaboratively create and expand regional community based and integrated food systems that are locally owned and controlled, environmentally sound, economically viable, and health-promoting. North Asheville Tailgate Market.  The area's oldest  farmers' market, conveniently located on UNC Asheville's campus, is in it's 29th year of operation with over 40 vendors selling locally produced goods. The market is open every Saturday during growing season.  For additional information, please click here

Nutritional counseling:  Chartwell's dietician, Janet Zusi, is available for for individual nutritional counseling and assessment.  Janet is available Mondays and Thursdays, 9 AM-3 PM, and can be reached at 828-251-6183 or by email.

Walking trails:  UNC Asheville offers walking trails within and adjacent to campus--the University Heights loop, the Glen Creek greenway on W.T. Weaver Boulevard, the Reed Creek greenway on Broadway, and the trail through the Botanical Gardens. 

Biofeedback training:  The Department of Health and Wellness in partnership with Campus Recreation offers a variety of facilitated and self-directed programs in the new optimal performance lab (HFC 210).  All programs use biofeedback to enhance awareness of users physiological responses to stress and to teach ways to reduce tension.  For more information, please go to http://facstaff.unca.edu/cschrade/biofeedback_at_unca.htm.

Exercise opportunities:  The Health and Fitness Center offers many opportunities to get in shape including recreational and lap swim, working out in the weight room, and walking/jogging on the indoor track.  For additional information, go to http://www.unca.edu/recreation/.

Group fitness classes:  Campus Recreation offers free fitness classes (with a valid UNCA ID card) in yoga, pilates, aerobics, and more.  Classes are held in HFC Dance Studio, Pool, or Highsmith Union.  For a current schedule of classes, go to http://www.unca.edu/recreation/groupex.html.

Center for Teaching and Learning:  The Center for Teaching and Learning hosts learning circles every semester, and usually over the summer as well.  Focused on personal and professional growth, these discussion groups are open to faculty and staff, and cover topics as varied as Robert Moses' Algebra Project and Martin Seligman's Authentic Happiness.  For more information and a schedule of activities for the semester, go to http://www.ctl.unca.edu/.

State Health Plan:  The State Health Plan (http://www.shpnc.org/)  provides a number of resources and free or low-cost opportunities to increase one's health. Among these are:

  • NC HealthSmart:  A portal to resources for healthy living (http://www.shpnc.org/nc-healthsmart.html)
  • Smoking cessation:  The N.C. State Health Plan announced that it is offering free generic nicotine patches to its members in response to the smoking ban in state government buildings and operations that began Tuesday.  To receive the patches, members of the State Health Plan must receive counseling from their health-care provider or take advantage of free tobacco-cessation support services available through NC Quitline.  For more information, visit www.shpnc.org/wellness.html or contact NC Quitline at 800-784-8669.
  • Flu shots:  Annual free or low cost flu shots each year (dates announced by Human Resources via email)
